Connect MCP clients

Choose a remote HTTP connection for the hosted server, or run a local stdio server with your own VoiceLab API key.

Cursor

Hosted MCP

Use a remote URL entry in ~/.cursor/mcp.json or .cursor/mcp.json:

json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "voicelab": {
      "url": "https://mcp.voicelab.uz/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Bearer ${env:VOICELAB_MCP_AUTH_TOKEN}"
      }
    }
  }
}

The gateway token must be available in Cursor's environment. Its interpolation syntax is ${env:NAME}. See the official Cursor reference.

Local stdio

First build the server from source. Replace the absolute path below with your checkout:

json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "voicelab": {
      "command": "node",
      "args": ["/absolute/path/to/mcp/dist/index.js"],
      "env": {
        "VOICELAB_API_KEY": "${env:VOICELAB_API_KEY}"
      }
    }
  }
}

Claude Desktop

For a local server, build VoiceLab MCP from source and add it to the desktop configuration:

  • macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json
  • Windows: %APPDATA%\Claude\claude_desktop_config.json
json
{
  "mcpServers": {
    "voicelab": {
      "command": "node",
      "args": ["/absolute/path/to/mcp/dist/index.js"],
      "env": {
        "VOICELAB_API_KEY": "vlk_replace_with_your_key"
      }
    }
  }
}

Keep this file private and restart Claude Desktop after saving it. Use an absolute path to Node as well if the app cannot find node.

Remote connectors use a separate setup flow. Consult Claude's remote connector guide and confirm that the client can supply the gateway's Bearer token. Do not paste a remote URL entry into the local stdio configuration.

Other clients

For ChatGPT, Grok, Muse, or another client, confirm that its current MCP integration supports both Streamable HTTP and the authentication advertised by VoiceLab's discovery endpoint. Check your client and account's connector support before configuring it.

Connection settings:

SettingValue
Endpointhttps://mcp.voicelab.uz/mcp
TransportStreamable HTTP
AuthorizationBearer <gateway token from the operator>
Acceptapplication/json, text/event-stream
Content typeapplication/json
Discoveryhttps://mcp.voicelab.uz/v1

If the client only accepts OAuth and cannot send a static Bearer token, the hosted endpoint is not directly compatible with that connection method. Use a supported client or an operator-managed authentication adapter.

Troubleshooting

  • 401: check the gateway token. It is separate from the VoiceLab API key used upstream.
  • No tools: check the transport, endpoint, MCP initialization, and client logs.
  • A local server exits: check the built dist/index.js path and VOICELAB_API_KEY environment variable.
  • Tool calls fail after connecting: inspect the MCP result's isError and upstream error details. Check the server account's permissions and credits.
